Keep Kids Safe Online
Support the EARN IT Act
U.S. Catholic Sisters Against Human Trafficking invites you to help stop the sexual exploitation and trafficking of children online. With children more frequently online since the onset of COVID-19 in March, incidents of child online exploitation have risen 126% according to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
The EARN IT ACT which seeks to address this egregious crime is gaining bi-partisan support among legislators in both the Senate (S. 3398) and the House of Representatives (H.R. 8454). EARN IT contains a provision for a commission that will issue new protection standards for online platforms. The EARN IT Act invites tech companies to issue guidelines to limit sex trafficking, grooming, and exploitation of children online. The bill will revoke the immunity that computer services claimed under the Communications and Decency Act ( sec. 230) so that survivors will be able to sue those who cause harm via online platforms, using federal civil law and state criminal and civil law. While proponents of the EARN IT Act are not opponents of privacy or encryption, effective standards for tech companies to protect children are overdue. You can read a short summary of the bill here and find answers to common myths here.
Take Action: Children bring special meaning to the holiday season. For most children, it is a time of happy anticipation and joy. Unfortunately, for far too many children, that joy and innocence has been stolen from them by traffickers and online predators. This holiday season and always, we are reminded of our duty to protect children so that they truly can experience the simple joys of childhood free from abuse and exploitation.
